WATCH: Gens surge back for second win of weekend

Diago Coelho scored the game-winner on a powerplay. The Gens headed into the third two goals down and came out on top, 5-3.

The chips were down, but the Cochrane Generals were far from out in last night's home game against the Three Hills Thrashers.

Down 3-1 after two, the Gens scored four unanswered goals in the third for a 5-3 victory and their second win of the weekend.

Diago Coelho scored the winner with a powerplay goal the ref didn't initially catch. Four minutes later he scored on another powerplay to give the Gens some comfort heading into the dying minutes of the game.

Recent recruit Carter Singleton was named the first star after scoring his first two goals as a Gen. It followed two assists the night before in Rocky Mt. House in his first game with the club.

"I love it here. It's a good crowd, and I'm just clicking with my line right now, which is good. We'll keep it up going heading into playoffs."

Singleton has been practicing with the Gens for the last couple of weeks to knock off the rust and get to know the team after starting the season with the Calgary Canuck. An injury prevented the 18-year-old forward from logging a single game with the Canucks.

"I had a pretty bad injury at the beginning of the year that set me back a bit, but playing the game again and having fun. That's all that counts."

Singleton struck first for the Gens in the second period from Evan Sine and Brayden Palinkas. Down 3-1, Caden Stephenson scored 26 seconds into the third from Ethan Matiece and Evan Judge to set the tone for the balance of the period.  Singelton tied it on an unassisted goal before Coelho's two powerplay goals.

There have been a few additions to the roster to fortify the team in advance of the HJHL playoffs.

"The new faces have definitely brought a lot of offense and a lot of goal-scoring, which we needed. We couldn't find the net during the first half of the season so when we started to add these players, we started to fill the net, which is what we need to make it deep into the playoffs."

The night before, the Gens held on to beat the Rams 5-4 in Rocky Mt. House.

The Gens have wrapped up fourth place in the south and will be facing the fifth-place Coaldale Copperheads in the opening best-fo-three series of the HJHL's south division playoffs. Game One is in Cochrane on Feb. 13. The series heads to Coaldale on Feb. 15. Should a third game be necessary, it heads back to Cochrane the next day.

Two games remain in the regular season for the Gens. They hit the road on Feb. 8 to face the Red Deer Vipers before returning home the next day for their last regular season game against the top team in the league, the Sylvan Lake Wranglers.

The Gens head into the weekend on a three-game winning streak.
