Sydney Bears were overpowered in the third period by the Newcastle North Stars in an entertaining, tough game at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday July 30. Bears lost 5-2.
The first period was full of penalties and the North Stars scored the only goal of the period on the powerplay 5 minutes into the game. There were 6 different penalties combined between the two teams in the period.
Bears replied with their first goal to Nic Kawasaki with 5 minutes to go in the second period with a hard shot from in front. Almost 2 minutes later, Tomas Landa nailed a cannon in the back of the net on the powerplay to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.
A disallowed Bears goal and 4 North Stars goals in the last period led to the final 5-2 score to the home team. Try as they might, Bears could not add to their tally but pushed hard against the defending premiers.
The following day, Bears would return home to face CBR Brave.
