Please note that due to a very successful 2023 season many of our imports are looking to return for the 2024 season so available import spots may be limited.
The Melbourne Mustangs Ice Hockey Club uses import players to supplement the playing roster in order to be fully competitive in the league and to provide the best possible opportunities for skills transfer to local Australian players. Each year we recruit 4-5 import players from Europe and North America.

The Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) is an amateur league. As such, no Australian team may pay its players. Nevertheless, we will help you to find local work within the conditions of your visa.
The Mustangs are headquartered in Melbourne, Victoria on the south-eastern coast of Australia. Renowned for its food, sport and culture, Melbourne has been frequently voted the world’s most liveable city.
Our home rink, O’Brien Icehouse, is located in Docklands and is the largest and best-appointed ice hockey facility in Australia.
The AIHL season starts in April and runs through to August/September. Games are scheduled for Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Often, double-header weekends are scheduled.
Import players typically arrive in March, just prior to season start, although some flexibility may be offered to the right candidates.
Players are expected to work hard and conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. This includes:
The Melbourne Mustangs are always interested to hear from talented local Australian or Kiwi players interested in playing at an elite level. Local players are supported by covering the costs of ice time, uniforms, travel and accommodation, meals, parking etc. Try-outs are typically scheduled for February/March. All candidates must be a member of the AIHL or their respective national leagues.
