Australia has taken the 2024 Trans-Tasman Challenge series over New Zealand with a 5-2 victory at the O’Brien Icehouse on Sunday afternoon, taking the series 2-1 in preparation for the IIHF Division 2A World’ campaign next month. The series, which featured numerous AIHL stars with all ten teams represented, saw some thrilling hockey at a sold out O’Brien Icehouse over the weekend, as both teams used it as their final onshore hit out before heading overseas in April. Ethan Hawes was the overtime hero in Game 1, with his goal sealing a 2-1 win for Australia on Friday night. It would be mirrored by the Ice Backs in Game 2, with Alex Regan grabbing the overtime winner for a 2-1 New Zealand victory on the Saturday night. Australia ran away with the victory in Game 3 thanks to two third period goals from Jamie Woodman and Vadim Virjassov and an empty-net insurance marker from Cam Todd, after the game looked destined for overtime yet again at 2-2 after two periods. The now regular Trans-Tasman series is currently planned to return later in 2024 at the conclusion of both the NZIHL and AIHL seasons, with a potential return to New Zealand in November yet to be confirmed. The final Australian team to depart for Serbia was also announced: Strat Allen (Sydney Ice Dogs) Mackenzie Caruana (Melbourne Ice) Nick Christensen (CBR Brave) Julian Fodor (Brisbane Lightning) Ethan Hawes (Newcastle Northstars) Mitch Henning (CBR Brave) John Kennedy (Newcastle Northstars) Anthony Kimlin (Sydney Bears) Casey Kubara (CBR Brave) Tyler Kubara (CBR Brave) Jordy Kyros (Perth Thunder) Bert Malloy (Cental Coast Rhinos) Michael McMahon (Melbourne Mustangs) Cam Todd (Sydney Bears) Aleksi Toivonen (CBR Brave) Vadim Virjassov (Melbourne Mustangs) Alex Wardlaw (Central Coast Rhinos) Kieren Webster (Perth Thunder) James Woodman (Perth Thunder) Australia will depart for Slovakia for a training camp, before heading to Belgrade to contest the IIHF Division 2A Worlds on April 21-27.
