The defending champ Islanders evened the best-of-seven series with a 15-14 triumph in Game 4 Sunday at Kiwanis Park after the Mets prevailed by a 12-8 margin in Game 3 the night before on Prince Edward Island.
Charlottetown won 3-2 in extra innings in Moncton Sept. 19 in Game 2 while the Mets took the series opener 9-2 Sept. 18 at Victoria Park.
Sunday’s high-scoring affair saw Duncan Picketts drive in five runs for the Islanders with a homer and a single. Scott Harper added a scoring single and double, and Josh Myers cashed in a pair of runs while going 3-for-4 at the plate. Nick MacPhail also went 3-for-5 at bat.
Jonathan Arsenault, Tyson McInnis, Jack Kraft, and Cole MacLaren each added RBI singles. Winning pitcher Brody McDonald scattered four runs on seven hits while issuing two free passes in three and two-thirds of an inning. Ben MacDougall and Logan Gallant combined to give up 10 runs on 11 hits, strike out two Mets, and walk 25 in three-plus innings on the mound.
The Mets also used three pitchers in Game 4, with Jackson Dekker’s losing line for Moncton including five runs, four hits, three walks, and two strikeouts in two and two-thirds of an inning. Adam Christie and Kevin Aube’s combined line had 10 runs on as many hits, along with two walks and three strikeouts in four innings.
Serge Vautour drove in three runs for the Mets with a single while going 3-for-4 at the dish. Justin Cormier and John Haimowitz notched two RBIs apiece, with Cormier connecting for a pair of singles and Haimowitz recording a double. Jake Greene added an RBI for Moncton.
In Game 3, Declan Buckle, Luc Vautour, Kolin Betts, Brian Smith, Luke Robison, and Stefan Martin combined for 12 RBIs for the Mets. Luc Vautour and Haimowitz each went 3-for-4 at bat. Cormier went the distance on the bump, conceding eight runs on as many hits while punching out six Islanders and walking three.
Losing pitcher Jake Beck allowed six runs on five hits while walking four Mets and sitting down one in three innings. Arsenault and Jack MacKenzie’s combined line included six runs, seven hits, two walks, and two strikeouts in four innings.
MacLaren, McInnis, Gallant, and Max Jardine of Miramichi each drove in runs for Charlottetown.
The Islanders’ Game 2 victory saw Picketts, Jardine, and Logan MacDougall record RBIs. Picketts went 2-for-3 at bat. Ben MacDougall earned the win on the hill after striking out three Mets and walking one while surrendering four hits in the final two innings.
Longtime Islanders ace Jordan Stevenson threw six innings in Game 2, scattering two runs on six hits while fanning nine Mets and walking one.
Dekker went the distance for the Mets in the losing cause, giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out four and issuing six free passes.
Haimowitz drove in both Moncton runs and went 2-for-4 at bat. Smith went 3-for-4 with three base hits.
Buckle cashed in three runs for the Mets in Game 1. Serge Vautour added two RBIs and Cormier, Haimowitz, Luc Vautour, and Robison added an RBI apiece. Christie picked up the pitching win after allowing a run on four hits, walking one, and striking out one in three and one-third innings.
Aube tossed three and two-thirds of an inning for Moncton, giving up a run on three hits while walking five and fanning one.
McDonald surrendered six runs on 10 hits, walked two, and punched out six in five-plus innings for the Islanders in the losing effort. Ethan Smith’s line included a walk and three runs on as many hits in one and one-third of an inning.
Picketts drove in a run for the Islanders, Arsenault went 2-for-2 on the night, and MacLaren went 2-for-4 at bat.
Game 5 is Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Charlottetown, with Game 6 set for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Moncton. If needed, the deciding contest is Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Victoria Park.
The series winner will earn the league pennant and get a chance to represent New Brunswick at next year’s nationals in Regina, Sask.
