Novysedlak lands with Ice Dogs
Tuesday, March 26, 2019 - Submitted by Burnie Mac

The Sydney Ice Dogs are proud to announce the signing of Australian goalie, Nicholas Novysedlak for the 2019 season. At 23 years of age, Nick will be suiting up for his fourth AIHL club and the young net minder in keen to make an impression on a revamped Ice Dogs roster.

“I want to prove myself and win the opportunity to play games,” said Novysedlak.

“Already I can see there is an encouraging and positive environment at the Ice Dogs, where I hope to grow and develop as a player.”

“I’ve been with the Melbourne Mustangs where I had two fun years with great teammates, and I am grateful for the opportunity they gave me, but now I’m looking forward to my future with the Ice Dogs.”

Originally, from the Gold Coast, Nick made his AIHL debut at 15, playing the Gold Cost Blue Tongues in 2010. He had strong connections to the Queensland AIHL franchise, with his father Milan, also playing goalie for the Blue Tongues for six seasons.

“I started playing hockey after watching one of my Dad’s games when he played for the Brisbane Bluetongues. I saw some kids playing in between the periods, and that’s what inspired me to play hockey.”

Nick excelled in junior hockey, representing both his home state of Queensland and his country. He suited up for Australia at the U18 and U20 IIHF World Junior Championships, wining a bronze Medal in 2015.

Sydney Ice Dogs Head Coach Andrew Petrie, was upbeat about adding another strong local goalie to his side.

"At the Ice Dogs we are constantly looking to provide a development environment for emerging talent via our "AIHL Pathways" program, and adding Nick to our already talented young group is a bonus for the club," said Petrie

"Nick comes from that same age-group of Goalies as Charlie Smart and Nick Mizen, and I think it's important that all clubs in the AIHL are working with and providing opportunities to young goalies."

"I've also known Nick's father, Milan for what feels like a lifetime, and I see Nick making a seamless transition into the Ice Dogs locker-room" said Petrie.

Just like his time with the Blue Tongues, a family connection was another important factor in the move to the Ice Dogs.

“Knowing there’s a friendship between my Dad and Coach Petrie has been great. Coach Petrie has been learning about what I’ve been doing, on and off the ice, reviewing my videos and explaining to me where I can help in the Ice Dog’s plan.”

Nick also acknowledged that the Sydney life style was a motivating factor for his move north.

“The beaches and a warmer climate!” laughed Nicholas, “It will be like I’m back home on the Gold Coast (almost)!”

The Ice Dogs 2019 campaign gets under way on Saturday 20 April at the Macquarie Ice Rink, when they face off against cross-town rivals the Sydney Bears. The Sydney Battle is one of the most hotly contested match ups on the AIHL calendar with capacity crowds cheering on the Sydney Clubs.
