Saturday The Ice Dogs suffered a tough loss to the Melbourne Ice on Saturday night. The score finished 4-1 and Grant Toulmin scored the only Ice Dogs goal of the night. The first period finished 0-0 with both sides having an even share of possession and chances. Damien Ketlo made some strong saves and the Ice Dogs missed a few good chances. The period finished with Daniel Pataky going to the box for roughing. Overall it was a strong first period with James Marino looking very sharp and Johnston being a constant nuisance for the Ice defencemen. Melbourne Ice entered the second on the PP but the Ice Dogs successfully killed the penalty. The Ice Dogs looked a lot flatter in the second and Matt Armstrong took advantage scoring the first goal of the game assisted by Kristoffer Backman and Viktor Gibbs Sjödin. Unfortunately, only 5 minutes later the Ice punished confusion amongst the Ice Dogs defence as Backman scored after coming from behind the goal after the mix up. A disappointing second period from the Ice Dogs saw the league leaders punish with the scores finishing 2-0 in the second. The ice Dogs started the third with a lot more energy but an extremely tough hooking call on James Marino saw the Ice go to the PP and take full advantage. Backman, making it 3-0 with assist from Wong and Dahlberg. The Ice Dogs energy didn’t drop and we immediately responded with Grant Toulmin rounding Davis and slotting our first of the night. Assists from Stephen Johnston and Todd Stephenson. Soon after Dayne Davis was called for interference and it provided the perfect opportunity to pull a goal back. The Ice killed the PP but soon after controversially Toulmin slotted the puck past Davis but it was missed by the referees. The commentary team and spectators all saw the puck hit the net. The game finished with the Ice Dogs pulling Ketlo with 54 seconds left to no effect as Bronte slotted a debut empty netter for the Ice. The game finished 4-1, plenty of positives for the Ice Dogs to take into Sunday. Sunday On Sunday, we suffered a devastating loss but we can all be proud of the effort and courage the Ice Dogs showed. After leading 2-0 and heading into the final period undermanned and out of steam we lost 4-2. The first period started well for the Ice Dogs showing excellent energy and we were rewarded. Billy Cliff scoring the opener with an assist from Captain Scott Stephenson. The Ice Dogs energy and ability to shut down the middle lane frustrated Melbourne Ice. Unfortunately, Stephen Johnston was sent for 5 and game after boarding Bronte towards the end of the first period a slip made the incident look worse. Scott Stephenson was sent to the box for high sticking early in the second but the Ice Dogs successfully killed both penalties and were excellent at closing the middle lane all period. The Ice Dogs once again rewarded for their persistence with Strat Allen scoring a superb goal thanks to assists from Todd Stephenson and Grant Toulmin. The Ice Dogs played tough but ran out of steam in the final period. A missed late hit on Billy Cliff which should have seen game was waved away earlier in the game frustrating the Ice Dogs bench. Melbourne scored 4 unanswered goals in the final period which saw tensions boil over. Dunwoodie and Hughes both seeing game for a fight in which Hughes will serve a lengthy suspension for the use of his elbow. Disappointing to come away with no points this weekend but with numbers on board we know we can take another 3 points from the Ice at home.
