Northstars take the shootout win against Melbourne Mustangs |

The Newcastle Northstars took the 6-5 win on Saturday night after a hard fought battle against the Melbourne Mustangs at HISS. After an intense three periods, that left the teams tied 5-5 the game went to shootout where the Northstars nabbed the win. The Melbourne Mustangs came out firing and proved to be a force to be reckoned with on ice. They dictated the pace of the game and keep up intensity throughout seeing Dayne Davis face 42 shots. The Mustangs side were incredibly fast on the ice and opened the scoreline midway through the first period. It kept the home crowd at HISS on the edge of their seats and the Northstars on their toes. “I think they were struggling actually, it was a pretty quick game. We really expected that, but we didn’t expect it to be that quick.” Northstars coach Ray Sheffield noted. Richie Tesarik didn’t leave the Mustangs goal unanswered and scored his first goal as a Northstar to level the score after Zane Jones set the shot up. The teams took turns scoring throughout the game until the end. A physical game saw tempers flare in the second period with two tussles between the opposing teams. As the shootout began, Davis continued his incredible form blocking all three shots from the Melbourne Mustangs. Joe Harcharik scored the winning goal for the Northstars. The league breaks for the AIHL All-Stars weekend in Adelaide where Joe Harcharik, Nick Rivait, Bert Malloy and Robert Haselhurst will represent the Northstars. The Northstars are back home for a double header on the June long weekend. Saturday 9th June with face the Melbourne Mustangs again at 5pm, followed by Perth Thunder on Sunday 10th June at 4pm.
