Tyler Hartman scored 12:42 into overtime as Selkirk College advanced to the 2018 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League Finals for the fifth time in six seasons with a 4-3 victory over Vancouver Island University on Saturday afternoon at the Castlegar Recreation Complex.
Hartman's goal capped a back-and-forth game that saw the Mariners hold a 3-2 lead into the final minute of regulation, when Logan Styler tied things up and sent the game to extra time on his second of the game with 49 seconds remaining.
Kobe Oishi had put VIU up in the first period on a power-play and the Mariners held that lead into the second. Jonas Horvath put the Saints on the board midweay through the second on a Selkirk man-advantage, and Styler put the hosts ahead with his first of the game minutes later.
Former Saints forward Alex Milligan drew VIU even with 13:04 left in the third period and it looked like a late Alex Hanson goal would force a Game 3 in the series before Styler's last-minute heroics.
Patrick Zubick made 39 saves in goal to pick up his first BCIHL playoff victory while Brett Clark surrendered four goals on 49 shots in defeat.
Both teams scored once on a combined 15 power-play opportunities, as Selkirk went 1/7 and VIU finished 1/8.
Selkirk will now await the winner of the TWU-UVic series that the Spartans currently lead 1-0. If TWU previals, they will host the BCIHL Finals while a Vikes series win would send the series to Castlegar.
