Northstars welcome new imports

Alex Yuill joins the 2024 Newcastle Northstars as a defenseman from Ontario Canada,  who has played in the Ontario Hockey League with the Barrie Colts,  Belleville Bulls and USports for the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

Yuill has spent the past three seasons in the national English league (Elite Ice Hockey League – EIHL) with the Guildford Flames, playing 138 games and reaching the playoffs each season. Alex arrives off the back of a semi-final knockout by eventual EIHL champions, the Sheffield Steelers.

We caught up with Yuill after his first week here and he says “Newcastle has been really nice so far, and I am really enjoying the city and the nice beaches around”.

Yuill says he “found out about hockey in Australia a while ago through friends who have played here, and have been interested in playing here for a while. I am looking forward to having a successful season”.

The second addition to the Northstars roster is Kyler Matthewsis a defenseman also from Ontario, Canada. In recent years, Matthews has played in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) for the Birmingham Bulls and the Knoxville Ice Bears, the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) for the Cincinnati Cyclones, the Federal Professional Hockey League (FPHL) for the Elmira Enforcers, as well as playing in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) and the NCAA III.

When we asked Matthews how he had been spending his time in Newcastle so far he said “Alex and I have been to a few beaches and will continue to explore the area”.  Matthews is looking forward to seeing other cities and rinks when playing on the road.

Matthews says he found out about Newcastle when he“ travelled down to Newcastle last year to see my brother in law and came to watch a Northstars game - I thought it would be a great place to play hockey”.

The guys suited up for the Northstars for the first time in Sydney on the weekend and can’t wait to get out on the ice in front of the best fans in the league!

Join us on Saturday 18th May when we welcome the Brisbane Lightning. Get your tickets from Northstars.thundertix.com
