Iqaluit Senior Men’s Hockey Introduces the Qaqsauq Cup
Iqaluit, Nunavut (December 4, 2014) – Tournament Convenor Cody Dean in partnership with the Iqaluit Senior Men’s Hockey League would like to introduce the first memorial Qaqsauq Cup.
The tournament is named in memory of those who perished in a tragic boat accident during a walrus hunt in 1994 aboard the Qaqsauq.
“We wanted the tournament to having meaning in the community. Members of the family who had their loved ones perish in the accident have always been huge supporters of local hockey and our community.” Said Dean.
The tournament will open Friday night at the Arctic Winter Games arena at 6PM with a ceremonial puck drop between the Ottawa Redwings and Iqaluit Icemen.
Round robin games will be played all weekend with the championship game being held on Sunday evening.
There will be an admission charge of $10/day or $20 for a weekend pass. Children 12 years and under and Elders will be free.
“Christmas is just around the corner and we wanted to help build excitement in the community with a competitive hockey tournament with teams coming in from Yellowknife, Rankin Inlet, Kuujuaq, Ottawa and of course the local hosts, Iqaluit.” Said Dean.
