After three seasons with the Fernie Ghostriders, Dylan Defosse is moving on to the University of Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines.

Defosse is excited to join the Wolverines program, which will allow him to continue playing while getting an education.

“Michigan is a great fit for me because the school will allow me to excel in the profession I have chosen to pursue (engineering), while allowing me to continue with hockey,” says Defosse, who joins Ghostriders teammates Johnny Elias and Gavin Lawrie on the Wolverines. “The team-first mentality coach (Chris) Haltinner strives for every year also makes me feel like the hockey program will suit me very well.”

In 125 career KIJHL regular season and playoff games, the Calgary product finished with 40 goals and 103 points. This past season Defosse put up career high numbers in regular season goals (24), assists (35) and points (59). He finished with 98 career regular season points.

In his final season, Defosse felt he was given a fantastic opportunity to show his parents, coaches and peers that he is a more dynamic player than he had shown in previous years.

“I really strived to achieve a complete 200-foot game,” says the five-foot-10, 180 pound forward. “I was able to add an offensive role to my resume this season when my coach gave me the extra opportunities. My linemates definitely helped me excel as a two-way centre.”

Defosse says playing in the KIJHL gave him exposure and opportunities that helped him reach the next level.

A product of the Calgary Buffalo Hockey Association, playing for the Blackhawks and Rangers, Defosse credits his time in Fernie for helping him grow as a person.

Leaving home without knowing anyone very well allowed him to make friends, expanding his comfort zone. Getting involved in the community by volunteering with kids allowed him to give back to hockey and Fernie, which has done so much for him.

“I look forward to taking the next step in my life, while being able to continue playing the game I love,” says Defosse.
