General Manager and Head Coach for the Fernie Ghostriders Junior Hockey Club

 

 

Overview of the Fernie Ghostriders and Community: The Fernie Ghostriders is a Junior B Hockey team who plays in the Kootenay International Hockey Junior Hockey League and is based in the beautiful City of Fernie which is located in the Southeast corner of British Columbia. As an employer, we seek and foster a person who can inspire the lives of leadership and purpose for our hockey players through hockey both on and off ice, teaching and developing these athletes, preparing them for their future in both hockey and life. We currently have an opening for Head Coach and General Manager.

 

 

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the incumbent is accountable for the day to day management of the hockey operations, including planning, strategic development, coaching, recruiting, staffing, budget development and monitoring, marketing, evaluation and delivery of the hockey program for the Fernie Ghostriders. The incumbent is expected to serve as an effective spokesperson for the Team, promoting and enhancing the image of the team within the community, the league and liaising with higher level teams and post secondary schools. The incumbent will be accountable for the planning and operation of spring, summer and main camps as well as hockey schools, collaborating with sponsors and event fundraising.


Nature and Scope:
 

 

The Head Coach and General Manager will be accountable for the successful operation and strategic direction of the Fernie Ghostriders Junior Hockey Club. More specifically, the accountability of this position would currently include the hiring, discipline and performance management of the assistant hockey coach(es) as well as part-time positions directly related to the hockey operation. Leading the team members as a positive role model, the position is also responsible for leading the interaction with the athlete members of the hockey team. During the “season”, the hockey operation needs to be managed seven days a week including both training and competition. Out-of-season duties for the General Manager and Head Coach include accountability for a comprehensive recruiting system designed to attract top quality athletes. The incumbent will also be responsible for directing an effective off-season strength and conditioning program, and will be accountable, in consultation with the President of the Team, for providing the leadership and strategic direction of a successful athlete development program.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit and evaluate the performance of the coaching staff which will include but not limited to, assistant coaches, goalie coaches, training staff etc
  • Accountable for the coordination and supervision of the players of the team so as to provide a quality, comprehensive, and successful program;
  • Accountable for the promotion of positive relations with communities and local media;
  • Accountable for athlete development including recruiting, monitoring academic progress for school aged players, which requires access to confidential academic records, guidance and retention;
  • Disseminate and interpret the rules governing the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, BC Hockey and Hockey Canada
  • Accountable for the management of all Team funds budgeted for the hockey operation;
  • Accountable for the performance of the Athletic Therapist and conditioning during the season to ensure development and implementation of a successful in-season strength program, maintenance program, injury assessment, rehabilitation and injury prevention program;
  • Manages an effective off-season strength and conditioning program as developed by the Strength and Conditioning Coach or outside resource, which will promote individual improvement in quickness, size and strength;
  • Accountable for the purchasing and maintenance of an up-to-date inventory of all equipment and uniforms, including regular inspections and repairs, and for health and safety within the hockey operation;
  • Accountable for the establishment and maintenance of an effective recruitment program which attracts top quality athletes.

Requirements

  • Post secondary schooling an asset
  • Coaching experience an asset
  • Experience with budget management
  • Integrity – a role model for athletes, motivator, mentor
  • Proven organizational, leadership and management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong technical background and practical experience at a highly competitive level
  • Level III NCCP certification
  • Strong leadership and human resource management skills
